Who: Susquehanna Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SQSPCA) has invited the public for a friendly golf competition and fundraiser for the shelter, celebrating the love of animals, community and sports. Held in honor of longtime friend to the shelter, Bob Schlather, and yearly participant in its golf tournaments, SQSPCA renamed its annual golf outing after his passing in April 2022. Non-golfers can join the event 6-8pm for a BBQ buffet dinner and live music; tickets can be purchased online at https://www.sqspca.org/news-events/ Players include area residents and golf enthusiasts, foursomes sponsored by local and regional businesses, and SQSPCA’s Board President. Also, for the first time, a Susquehanna SPCA team of staffers sponsored by a generous donor will be participating. In the spirit of the Olympic Games, the awards this year are gold, silver, and bronze medals to be presented for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place to the teams with the lowest combined scores of the day, aka, the Team Low Gross champions. Winners for Closest to the Pin and Closest to the Line will also receive medals.
Why:
This summertime fundraiser is so important in raising support that makes a lasting impact on the lives of vulnerable animals. With its state-of-the-art facility, surgical and medical suite, and professional veterinary team, Susquehanna SPCA is able to prioritize sick and injured animals like Piper, a sweet and affectionate young dog who arrived with a shattered leg from a gunshot wound. She was brought to SQSPCA for the life-saving medical care they provide to animals in crisis who have nowhere else to turn. Piper is doing amazing now, six weeks post-surgery, and has a whole lifetime of adventure ahead of her! SQSPCA recently marked its 3-year anniversary in its new facility and in that short time, has become a regional animal resource center whose impact is making a measurable difference for people and animals in need both here in Otsego County and beyond. Just this year, they have already cared for nearly 1,200 animals—over 260 more than at the same time last year. This has been achieved not by adding more kennels and cages, but by helping people and animals through programs such as low-cost spay/neuter clinics for members of the general public who income qualify and free rabies clinics, providing medical services to animal shelters throughout the region, and maintaining a robust foster program. SQSPCA’s annual golf tournament supports the work of the shelter in serving animals in need of care throughout the year.
The Susquehanna SPCA is a 501c3 charitable organization established in 1917. We are a privately funded, state inspected animal shelter practicing best outcome philosophies in the care of homeless, abandoned, and seized animals across the region. Private donations, grants, fundraising and our New Leash on Life Thrift Shop are the shelter’s only source of income, and our ability to rescue homeless animals in need depends entirely on the compassion and generosity of our community.
