ART Garage Open House
Area residents and visitors are invited to a holiday season OPEN HOUSE Saturday December 14, 11AM-2PM to enjoy the new show MULTIPLES: 60+ artworks compressed into a single but spacious bay. Light refreshments. The event will feature the talented and versatile artist, Marcie Schwartzman, Cooperstown, and any of the other artists who hail from ‘over the river and through the woods’ — further away. Weather permitting, Michael Fedorov will also attend, who paints primarily with scrapers that he adapts for painting. He creates wild and textured high-energy canvases. Schwartzman will informally discuss her techniques, challenges and inspiration with a focus on the rich array of stoneware ceramics in the show. These include ‘origami’ bowls with different colored glazes and surfaces, folded a bit like overlapping flower petals; and multiple handheld monochromatic bowls with tactile white beaded borders. She will also discuss her non-functional deep blue orbs, that suggest an infinite firmament of stars, despite their tabletop size.
Others in the exhibition: farmer folk artist Lavern Kelley (Oneonta), whose work is in the permanent collections of museums including Fenimore Art Museum, the Smithsonian and the Museum of International Folk Art, Santa Fe. Five small animals and birds — even a bison and a hummingbird– demonstrate his skill. Trevor Wilson (Hobart) offers a cameo display of luminous ‘light boxes’ – framed multiple layers of colored, sandblast-etched glass (by the artist), which can reflect brilliant ‘shadows’ of reflected color. Michael Fedorov, who lives in the woods of rural Maryland, NY, presents multiple upstate landscapes, at dawn or dusk—including an eclipsed sun, that evokes last spring’s solar event. Gail Peachin of South Worcester and Hudson NY displays multiple treatments of repurposed vintage photographs of unknown figures, cut out from their environment, and replaced with abstract art patterns in reverse collage.
The show is open Saturdays 11-2, through Jan 25, and every day with a text / call to 315-941-9607 ; or write leartgarage@gmail.com, to set up an appointment. The Art Garage has been serving the area for 14 years. See FB / Instagram for images and more.
