Artist Demonstration: Marcie Schwartzman

Flash! Artist Demonstration: Marcie Schwartzman at Work in the Art Garage Cooperstown NY — Local artist Marcie Schwartzman will be working in the public’s eye Saturday December 18, 11AM-1PM at the Art Garage, 689 Beaver Meadow Road, a public program offered in conjunction with the show NEW WORK.

Ms. Schwartzman is known for her inventive artform: she has been working her unique ceramic/fiber aesthetic for nearly two decades. The Art Garage is presenting her striking sculptures that represent fire, rain and air, and an array of small understated bowls, each glazed with a constellation of beads. For her artist’s demonstration she will be experimenting with silk jersey and mesh to create a lichen-like elements to merge with cairn-like ceramic “stones.” An accomplished seamstress and ceramicist, she combines two seemingly incongruous elements into a harmonious whole. Visitors will also get to see works by preeminent local painters, Ashley Norwood Cooper and Tracy Helgeson. Cooper creates super-charged intimate scenes that reflect the drama or mundane episodes of domestic life, with, sometimes, insects like fireflies and now, bees. Next to her lively paintings are suspended six oversized encaustic “creepy bees,” suspended from the rafters and in our space, the start of a new sculptural installation. Helgeson continues to hone the landscape that surrounds her, that she ever further reduces to the essence of color and form, populating her works with the occasional barn or farm house. The NEW WORK exhibition also features her resplendent autumn trees, all smaller more intimate works for the current show. A cameo exhibition of functional ceramics by quest artist Robert Seward will also be on view.

The gallery is open most Saturdays 11am-2pm and always daily with a text or phone call: 315-941-9607 (text), or 607-547-5327 telephone. Located at 689 on bucolic Beaver Meadow Road a mile from Cooperstown in the town of Middlefield. MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST: Marcie Schwartzman is a fiber and clay artist living and working in Cooperstown, NY. While attending Johns Hopkins University in the School of Engineering, she studied ceramics at a community center whose teachers became co-founders of the well-respected Baltimore Clayworks. A move to Richmond, VA took her to graduate study in Industrial Engineering, and clay classes at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. After career and child-rearing, she returned to clay in the 1990’s and in 2003 was apprenticed to Sara Baker of Bloomsburg, PA. There, she honed her skills and developed her fascination with ceramic glazes. A lifelong home sewer, she began to meld the two art forms into the work she is doing today. Her goal is to explore the qualities that fiber and clay have in common and have one enhance the other. She designs her clay forms to accommodate fiber attachments which reflect the glaze textures and she customizes her glazes in order to unify the clay and fiber elements. Schwartzman seeks to always “remain loyal to the vessel: it lends itself to metaphors about containment, interiors, dichotomies, and usefulness.”
