Cooperstown Summer Music Festival Presents: The Bill Charlap Trio
The Bill Charlap Trio, one of the world’s premier jazz ensembles, will perform at the Otesaga Resort Hotel ballroom on Sunday, August 4 at 7:30pm. This performance is the first in the Cooperstown Summer Music Festival’s 2019 mainstage lineup.
Led by renowned jazz pianist Bill Charlap with Peter Washington on bass and Kenny Washington on drums, the Grammy-nominated trio has played together for over two decades and is known for its infectious chemistry and its charismatic live performances at top jazz clubs such as Birdland, the Village Vanguard, and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.
Over the course of his career, Charlap has worked with such jazz luminaries as Gerry Mulligan, Phil Woods, Tony Bennett, and Wynton Marsalis, developing a reputation as both a sensitive accompanist and a singular performer in his own right. Considered one of the foremost interpreters of American popular song, he can be relied upon for innovative yet authentic renditions of familiar standards, with Time Magazine saying that “no matter how imaginative or surprising his take on a song is, he invariably zeroes in on its essence.”
“We are thrilled to be able to have the Bill Charlap Trio at CSMF this year, continuing our tradition of bringing the finest jazz ensembles to the Festival,” says Linda Chesis, Festival founder and Artistic Director. “Jazz lovers can save the trip to New York and instead experience the thrill and intimacy of a jazz club performance here in Cooperstown.”
Those who may not be as familiar with the jazz tradition are invited to come and encounter the jazz songbook in the hands of a veritable master. When asked about his interpretations of jazz standards, Charlap has said “it’s about feeling the whole language [of jazz] and finding my way within it.” Audiences will be glad they came along for the ride.

ABOUT THE COOPERSTOWN SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL:
Founded in 1999 by flutist Linda Chesis, the Cooperstown Summer Music Festival has been bringing world-class chamber music performances to the Cooperstown area for 21 years. The festival has featured performances by the Tokyo String Quartet, the American String Quartet, the St. Lawrence String Quartet, Kurt Elling, Tim Fain, Hilary Kole, Simone Dinnerstein, Mark O’Connor, John Pizzarelli, the Sonia Olla Flamenco Dance Company, and many more.
Cooperstown is home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, the Glimmerglass Festival, and the Fenimore Art Museum as well as many galleries, restaurants, and a historic Main Street. Concerts are held in venues across Cooperstown, including Christ Church (the church of author James Fenimore Cooper) and the ballroom of the grand Otesaga Hotel.
Celebrated graphic artist Milton Glaser (best known for the I Heart NY campaign) has created a series of 18 posters for the Festival featuring violins and cows, a nod to Cooperstown’s rural character. Performance Today host Fred Child has said, “Not only do they do interesting concerts, they have great posters.”
The Cooperstown Summer Music Festival is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
