Dust off the Constitution

Art Garage Offers Participatory Constitutional Arts Collaboration Friday June 19 Cooperstown NY—The Art Garage and Cooperstown artist Ashley Norwood Cooper are collaborating on a broad participatory arts project that involves artists, area residents and three relevant amendments to the United States Constitution, Amendments 13-15. These address emancipation, voting rights, citizenship and more. In the safety of one’s home, everyone is invited to handwrite one of more of these amendments. “Embellishments are a plus but not required,” noted the organizers, “and good handwriting, although appreciated, is not a criterion.” While geared towards voting age adults, future voters “learning their country’s history” are also welcome to take part in this heritage project. Covid-19 precautionary guidelines must be followed when on site. Friday June 19, participants deposit their handwritten offerings in a central “ballot box” created by artist Ashley Norwood Cooper, and located in the open-air Middle Bay of the garage. Participants are encouraged to indicate by email, text or phone their projected time of arrival, as no two visitors will be permitted inside the Middle Bay at the same time. All visitors should wear masks. Sanitizer will be provided. The gallery will be open 11AM to 5:00PM for this heritage activity. “This seems a good way for all of us to review and honor the promise of our Constitution,” noted Sydney Waller and Ashley Cooper, ”and to become better acquainted with these particular amendments on a creative visceral level.” The idea to hand-copy sections of the US Constitution comes from arts educator and former summer resident, Amy Snider, who initiated a broader project in 2016. In honor of the late Ms Snider, professor emerita at Pratt Institute, her early paintings will be on display, donated to the Art Garage by the artist’s sister, artist Jenny Snider. Also a cameo display of works by Ms Cooper. To engage more friends and acquaintances in citizenship, art collector Frank Kolbert began to distribute small copies of the Constitution in 2016. The Main Gallery will also be open for one-at-a-time visitors. Still up due to circumstances: Winter Watch, featuring Tracy Helgeson, Robert Seward, Vickie Whicker, Ada Yonenaka, Lavern Kelley and Alice Hudson. Up though end of month. Participants will be invited to return to the gallery the following week to draw an amendment from the box, in someone else’s painstaking handwriting, to pin to their refrigerator or otherwise post and revisit in their home. The Amy Snider paintings will be for sale as a Make-an-Offer transaction. Proceeds will in part benefit the local chapter of the NAACP in Oneonta. This is a second collaboration between Ms Cooper and the Art Garage. A prior project involved mailing artist-decorated Thank You for Your Service cards for Valentine’s Day to Otsego County residents then serving in the military. Numerous area artists participated, with the support of the county veterans office. To make an appointment for a Friday June 19 drop-off of an Amendment, or for information, please contact the Art Garage at 607-547-5327, text 315-941-9607 or email leartgarage@gmail.com.
