Family Farm Day
Fifty-five farms will welcome visitors during the 7th Annual Family Farm Day (FFD), Saturday, August 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Explore local farms throughout Schoharie, Otsego, and Delaware Counties and see, touch, and taste firsthand farm-fresh products, activities, and tours, all for free! Explore fish farming, beekeeping, maple syrup making, cheese making, milk bottling, sheep’s wool processing, cashmere goats, orchards, cider making, and much more. Capture farm memories, and bring coolers and insulated shopping bags for farm products purchased throughout the day. FFD (non-insulated) tote bags will be available while supplies last.
Complete information about all participating farms can be found in the 2019 Farm Guide, available in print or online at www.familyfarmday.org. “Plan ahead for your farm stops or choose them spontaneously as your day allows,” said event Coordinator, David Cox, Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) Schoharie and Otsego Counties. “The guide has farms organized by county, including maps and farm descriptions, making it your guide to an adventure – good fun for everyone!”
Over 51,000 Farm Guides will be included in five regional, mid-August editions of the My Shopper / Pennysaver and the County Shopper (Delaware Edition) that reach nearly every household in the region. “We think the public will appreciate the added convenience and that it will help increase overall attendance at participating farms,” Cox said. “We encourage folks to visit farms as their schedules permit – a few or many – it doesn’t matter. The farms are open for them.”
“That’s the point!” said Ray Pucci, President of the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce. “While we always welcome visitors from outside the region, we find a majority of participants are from the greater region, and we want to build on that very important relationship.”
Mariane Kiraly, CCE Delaware County and FFD Co-coordinator, agrees, “It was really great to see last year, our first time with FFD and unsure of what to expect. The local communities in all three counties really did turn out for their farms – a key to building awareness of good agricultural practices and developing long-term customer bases. And with over fifty farms participating each year, repeat visitors will always see something new.”
The 2019 Farm Guide will be available also at selected locations: participating farms, farmers’ markets, visitor centers, chambers of commerce, libraries, and CCE’s in all three counties. Or, download a PDF version at www.FamilyFarmDay.org on a smartphone to plan your tour. Be sure to “Like” us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/FamilyFarmDay for daily postings and follow FFD on Instagram at www.instagram.com/familyfarmday/.
Win a prize! Complete the short survey in the Farm Guideor at any participating farm and be eligible to win local maple syrup and/or honey – a $30 value of the winner’s choice. Three winning numbers will be posted by Friday, September 7, on the Family Farm Day webpage.
For everyone’s safety, please adhere to Family Farm Day etiquette. No pets are allowed on farms; please remain in designated areas while on farms.
Family Farm Day is produced by CCE Schoharie and Otsego Counties and CCE Delaware County and is made possible by our participating sponsors and farms. Please acknowledge their role(s) by supporting their businesses.
