Free Gallery Talk by Petey Brown

Public Invited to Free Gallery Talk by Petey Brown, Wed Aug 23

Cooperstown NY—The Art Garage will be offering a free talk by established artist Petey Brown, of Garratsville and Brooklyn, Wednesday, August 23, at 6PM, illustrated with slides. Brown’s small powerful paintings – mostly views composed on or from a subway—are featured in the current three-person exhibition, Passages: Creatures & Curiosities, that includes series by Ava Fedorov and Helen Quinn. Brown will address the question of how to decide subject matter, and will include images from her many different series to “illustrate this dilemma for a figurative painter”. Her work was last seen at the Art Garage in 2018: a luminous swimmer series featured in the group show, SPLASH.

The galleries will open at 5:15PM with light refreshment. Reservations are recommended although not required: leartgarage@gmail.com, or text/call 315-941-9607.

On Wednesday September 6 at 6PM the Art Garage will present the final program in the Passages series. The Rural Transportation Perspectives panel will focus on the challenges and possibilities of public transportation in rural Upstate and offer a potential source of inspiration as an alternative to the urban subway perspectives in the show.

The gallery is located at 689 Beaver Meadow Road —” halfway between Origins Café and Bassett Healthcare”— and is open Saturdays through September 9, 11am-3pm, and other days with an appointment.

Ms Brown, who spends her summers Upstate in Garratsville, noted that she returned to “life outside” after two years of pandemic lockdown. “I once again could travel from my home in Brooklyn to my studio in Soho,” she explained. “[Experiencing] the risks and pleasures of riding the MTA [subway], [and] to then paint in my comfortable studio are the inspiration for this body of work.” The small paintings in Passages offer views from her studio window and sunsets observed as the train crossed a bridge, offering “color and composition surprises—moments that intrigue me as an artist.” Seasonal changes provided additional variation to color and mood. Brown most recently exhibited her work in a two-person show at Alexander/Heath Contemporary, Roanoke, Va. Last spring, her work was included in 11 Women of Spirit at the Zürcher Gallery in New York. She also exhibits regularly at Birdhouse Gallery in Brooklyn and numerous other galleries in New England and NYC area. In 2021 her work was featured in the Jason McCoy Gallery Drawing Challenge/Artsy virtual exhibition. Her work is in numerous public and private collections including the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C, Coca-Cola USA, Atlanta, GA and the DeCordova Museum, Lincoln, MA. Brown’s work was reviewed by Ashley Norwood Cooper of Cooperstown in Delicious Line, in 2017; and over the years has received attention in the New York Times and the Boston Globe. She is a graduate of Wheaton College, Norton, MA and the Boston University School of Fine Arts. ###
