Holiday Art Exhibition: Something Old / Something New

Vibrant Holiday Show Something Old, Something New at the Art Garage Cooperstown NY- With the Something Old,  Something New: the holiday show, visitors will find ten artists’ artwork in a rich range of mediums- all kinds of functional inventive ceramics in many forms, flowing hand-dyed indigo scarves (even an indigo wall hanging), nature cyanotypes, repurposed vintage photographs, wildlife block prints and gorgeous one-of-a-kind (affordable!) paper earrings. For “something new,” first-time exhibitors include Enrique Bayron Perez  (Cherry Valley), Mary Lou Ganio (Roseboom), Carla Hall (Morris) and Philippa Shrader (Wimbleton, UK and Rome NY). Familiar long-time favorites include Gail Peachin, Marcie Schwartzman, Robert Seward, Ada Yonenaka and Jamie Young, as well as popular even legendary self-taught artists: the late Lavern Kelley (carved wildlife) and Louis Sherry ( suspended colorful ‘birdhouse’ constructions) New art forms include nature-celebrating block prints by Mary Lou Ganio, layered embellished earrings by Philippa Shrader and subtle nature cyanotypes by Jamie Young (Middlefield and Syracuse). “A new artform we’re featuring is also one of the oldest photographic processes,” noted Art Garage founder and curatorm Sydney Waller, citing Jamie Young and his one-of-a-kind cyanotypes. Per Young, he “simply” hand-coats a cyanotype emulsion onto paper and exposes it to UV light. Each cool-toned print  comes out differently; all have the sensibility of a long-ago era. Anothder time-honored technique on display:  indigo-dyed, shibori-patterned scarves by Ada Yonenaka. New-to-the-gallery featured artist, Mary Lou Ganio, has spent a lifetime exploring the wonders of nearby-wildlife through art. She is particularly taken by possums, and even has a separate Instagram account  for them. Frogs, wrens, crows and racoons star in her art, some even printed on cotton tea towels (also available). Ceramic artists in the show include Carla Hall (abstract underwater-inspired wall tableaux ) Enrique Bayron Perez ( elegant striking vessels) Marcie Schwartzman, (textured small bowls), and Robert Seward, who offers abstract candle holders, sets of one-of-a kind, felt-backed coasters and tiles, earthy vases and patterned bowls. The show will be open Saturdays 11-2PM through January 17. The gallery also opens daily by appointment. The gallery will host a series of open houses and informal artists’ demonstrations periodically. Watch for these Saturday Artist-in-Residence programs.
