Lavern Kelley: Gallery Talk Sat July 24 @ 2PM
Sydney L. Waller, Art Garage founding director, will discuss Lavern Kelley (1928-1998) Saturday, July 24, at 2PM at the Art Garage, 689 Beaver Meadow Road.
The remarkable farmer-artist is especially well-known for his carved vintage trucks, a selection on display in the current show ROOTS. Waller’s talk will touch upon his life experiences and his many art forms in addition to carving.
Space is limited; reservations are recommended: text 315-941-9607, call 607-547-5327.
Visitors are reminded to park on the gallery lawns, never on town road.
Kelley was also an innovative photographer who developed an approach to showcase the accuracy of his carvings. He would carefully compose photographs of each finished work, arranged so that the trucks appeared to be life-size. He also made two-sided ‘folk art’ drawings that celebrated the latest farming equipment of the time until the early 1950s, when he stopped drawing and devoted his art exclusively to carving. An informative, illustrated catalogue will be available, with dozens of photographs of his work, co-published with the Catskill Arts Society and designed by Doreen DeNicola. Lavern Kelley: Farmer Artist, documents his remarkable output and features excerpts from his compelling essays. Selected images will be available on FBArtGarageCooperstown. Ms Waller and co-founder of Gallery 53, Anne Gourlay Gabler, introduced Mr. Kelley to the world in the 1980s, courtesy of guest curator Bette Alexander and artist/antiques dealer David Montgomery. “He took the world by storm the last decade of his life,” Waller noted, “becoming the first State Master Folk Artist, as designated by the State Council on the Arts.”
The Art Garage represents the Kelley estate of trucks, drawings and photographs, all available for viewing by appointment. The talk is a program of the current exhibition, ROOTS, that also features Nora Ashwood’s remarkable woven drawings and Marc Pelletier’s luscious paintings. On the last day of the show, Wednesday August 11 at 4PM, Marc Pelletier will discuss his accomplished abstract and abstracted paintings. Talks are free. Reservations are highly recommended. As part of the parallel one person show, Reflections on Dissonance, in the adjacent Art Garage Middle Bay, artist Christina Hunt Root will discuss her art Friday Aug 6, 5PM. Again, reservations highly recommended.
