New Exhibition: Artists OBSESSED @ Art Garage
Cooperstown, NY—The first Art Garage show of the season, Artists Obsessed, is open Saturdays May 23, 30, June 6, 13, 20, 27, and July 4. 11-3 — PLUS, any day with an appointment just contact 315-941-9607). The exhibition features four artists: two from Otsego County: Nancy Callahan, Gilbertsville and the late Lavern Kelley, rural Oneonta; and two from Chenango County: David Wilson, South New Berlin outskirts, and Todd Bachman, North Pitcher. On display is a concentration of ‘creative compulsion.’ The Main Gallery presents Nancy Callahan, whose work Fenimore Art Museum displayed in 2023. She offers five totally mesmerizing sculptures that incorporate elements from old-fashioned toys, vintage Victoriana—and dreams. The Middle Bay gallery showcases nationally-recognized farmer-folk artist, Lavern Kelley (1928-98), with a dramatic, floor-to-ceiling sweep of several dozen drawings mostly from the 1940s and never before exhibited. Concurrently, the Leo Koenig Gallery, Andes, will also feature Kelley’s work, including five trucks, in their new group show, Paint Your Life! on view starting May 24. David Wilson, known professionally for his large-scale architectural glass projects found in metro stations, religious buildings, courthouses and on campuses throughout the country, shares a personal, totally different, body of work: more than a half-dozen ‘vehicular’ sculptures — catafalques, dragsters and more, with attitude. All are on wheels and largely depict his personal response to the current state of affairs. First-time exhibitor Todd Bachman will mostly present objects made of wood—a cabinet of maple and mahogany and an assortment of exquisite turned textured bowls, many coaxed from ‘spalted’ wood. Also, in the Middle Bay Gallery, several stunning vintage Singer sewing machines (1918 and 1923), models of elegant industrial design – two among dozens he has restored. Bachman is self-taught. He will be Artist-in-Residence Sat. June 20, 11-2, to discuss in detail his wood work and his restored Singer sewing machines. Nancy Callahan and David Wilson will also offer free weekday artists talks, watch for details. The Art Garage has been serving the area for 15 years with a wide-range of exhibitions, and a robust series of free public programs: artists’ demonstrations, talks and panel discussions. Located at 689 Beaver Meadow Road, the gallery is open Saturdays 11-3 in the summer, and opens daily by appointment: text/call 315-941-9607 or email leartgarage@gmail.com.
