Opening: ‘Art + Objects 1962-2021’, a Tom Nussbaum solo!

Tom Nussbaum Retrospective Opens at Art Garage Opens Sat. Aug. 14 Cooperstown NY— The Art Garage is pleased to present Art + Objects 1962-2021, a retrospective of artworks by Tom Nussbaum that will open Saturday August 14, 4-6PM in the Main Gallery in conjunction with the East Orange NJ Black Lives Matter Project at 689 Beaver Meadow Road near Cooperstown.

Nussbaum, an intriguing midcareer artist based in Burlington Flats NY and East Orange NJ, is known for a rich variety of work including sculpture, large scale public artworks, drawings, paper cuts, prints, children’s books, animations, and functional design objects. He is instrumental in providing access for The Art Garage to screen the work-in-progress documentary, ‘It Takes A Village / BLM Artivism” and facilitating the exhibit of works by East Orange NJ muralists in the adjacent gallery.

The show will be on view through September 14, Saturdays 11AM-3PM and daily with a text or phone call: 315-941-9607.

The exhibit also includes a pop-up shop of affordable design objects including delightful hat racks, night lights, candle holders, jewelry, posters, greeting cards, and activities for kids.

Nussbaum has been working creatively since childhood. This show represents six decades of his work, beginning with the toys he invented in 1962 at the age of nine, and continuing with a variety of colorful figurative and abstract work, to the present, with his current series of inventive sculptures. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the USA and internationally. He has completed forty site-specific commissions located in a variety of public settings from Princeton NJ to Minneapolis MN to Washington DC, in public plazas, train stations, schools, hospitals, libraries, environmental centers, and playgrounds. He has been a visiting artist and lecturer at a number of colleges and universities, and has served on many peer-review panels and juries. He has been awarded two New Jersey State Individual Artist Fellowships and is a three-time MacDowell Colony Fellow. He states that “I am exploring connections between the human figure and forms found in architecture, art, nature, technology, vessel-making and textile traditions from around the world. These new constructions are a continuation of my life-long interest in container forms, architecture, and figurative sculpture. The free-standing sculptures reference vessels and baskets, the architectural frameworks of buildings and towers, and the human figure. The three-dimensional wall works have an affinity to paintings and textiles.” Nussbaum’s aesthetic is informed by abstract art, exploration of color and form and a deep interest in non-academic creative practices such as (so called) folk art sculpture, sign painting, quilt making, indigenous architecture and non-western object making traditions. He works in an improvisational and intuitive way and continues to push this work forward.
