Vintage Cameras & Cyanotypes w Jamie Young

Visit with Jamie Young: Art Garage Artist-in-Residence Saturday January 17 Fine art photographer Jamie Young will be the final artist-in-residence-for-the-day at the Art Garage, Saturday January 17, 11-2. He is a fine art photographer based in Syracuse and Middlefield, NY, who specializes in landscapes. The current group show, Something Old Something New features his lyrical, brooding nature-focused cyanotypes. Cyanotypes are considered an ‘alternative photographic’ process — cyanotography, invented in 1842, doesn’t require a camera in the modern sense.Gallery visitors will be able to see “some of the weird old cameras, as well as some coated cyanotypes and the printing hardware to show how it looks,” Young noted, “And maybe a few other print examples too.” For cyanotypes he uses contact print frames and a UV light source, like the sun or sky. He may print something using the outside light to show how easy cyanotypes are. He will also be happy to discuss aspects of the history, depending on interest. Young’s photographs often combine the geographical and the spiritual, and embody an aesthetic reminiscent of the Hudson River School painters. “In a time of climate change and climate grief,” he noted, he hopes “these images offer a sense of redemption, reminding observers that the natural world is continuously being renewed.” He uses antique panoramic film cameras and modern digital cameras as well as a 1905 box camera for cyanotypes. Young has become a global expert on panoramic vintage cameras. When he’s not shooting his personal work, he teaches design theory and more at Syracuse University. Something Old Something New also features work by Mary Lou Ganio (woodblock prints), Carla Hall(ceramics), Lavern Kelley (wildlife carvings), Gail Peachin (manipulated photographs), Enrique Bayron Perez and Robert Seward, (ceramics), Louis Sherry (animal-shaped birdhouses), Philippa Shrader (earrings and gift boxes) and Ada Yonenaka (textiles).
