Zoom-Option Artist’s Talk: Ashley Norwood Cooper

Artist Ashley Norwood Cooper to Discuss her Art: Free Program

The Art Garage is pleased to announce artist Ashley Norwood Cooper will via zoom discuss her work from the Art Garage, Saturday December 11 at 10AM. The talk will be recorded and made available afterwards. Interested parties must request the zoom link by Friday at 6PM:  leartgarage@gmail.com.  A very limited number of guests can also be accommodated in the gallery for the live event, by reservation. Text or call 315-941-9607 for reservations. The gallery will post excerpts of the talk on its Facebook page as soon as possible. The gallery will be open for regular viewing 11AM-2PM following the program.

Also on display in the Art Garage New Work exhibition: radiant iconic landscape paintings by Tracy Helgeson; highly-original ceramic/textile sculptures and small stoneware bowls by Marcie Schwartzman. Guest artist Robert Seward will be presenting a body of ceramics including candlesticks and small tile-shaped plates. The show is on view through December 31, 2021. Ms. Cooper lives in Cooperstown and teaches part-time at SUNY Oneonta. Her work in the gallery includes suspended encaustic bees and paintings of bees and their keepers. Her art garnered attention in the New York Times just a year ago, when Jillian Steinauer, art critic, reviewed a group show but noted: “I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one figurative painter here: Ashley Norwood Cooper, in high-key color.  Ms. Cooper renders intimate scenes of women who seem immersed in their interior lives and creativity (always with cats at hand). Tender and funny, the works stopped me in my tracks.” (The New York Times, March 5, 2020). Her work has also been reviewed in The Guardian (U.K.). Her art will be featured in a solo exhibition at Fenimore Art Museum in two years.

Cooper earned her MFA in Painting from Indiana University and her undergraduate degree in Latin at the University of Georgia. Indeed, ancient Greek mythology can seep into her work: the bees reference Eurydice. She paints in her particular style “because I am drawn to messiness.” She confessed “a perverse respect for the truth I see in clumsiness; I revel in inconsistencies and can’t make myself fix them or cover them up.” She also observed, “New technology brings the collective id of the whole world to a tiny screen that you hold in your hands as you fall asleep each night — my family and friends are plagued with nightmares.” A self-described middleclass mom trying to raise a family in Cooperstown “in a world I cannot understand or soothe,” Cooper shared that she uses the paintbrush relentlessly “to deal with whatever vexes her.” She exhibits regular in galleries in Seattle and New York. The Art Garage is open Saturdays 11AM-2PM and daily 9AM-6PM with a text or call: 315-941-9607 or telephone 607-547-5327 to set up a time. More work can be seen at FBArtGarageCooperstown or theartgaragecooperstown on Instagram.
